Center for Building Energy Research & Development (CBERD)
Decades of collaboration and co-operation across several diverse fields have forged a deep friendship and understanding between the world’s two largest democracies, the United States of America (U.S.) and India. In 2009, the two countries leveraged the success of historic partnerships and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the U.S.-India Partnership to Advance Clean Energy (PACE). Through the PACE- Research program, a new five-year joint U.S. India Center for Building Energy Research and Development (CBERD) was created to advance buildings energy efficiency in both nations.
The main focus of the CBERD program was to promote innovation in energy efficiency through collaborative research, by focusing on the effective integration of information technology with building controls and physical systems.
The United States (U.S.) and India are among the highest energy users in the world. While building energy use constitutes over a third of that consumption in each country, 30-50% of that energy is wasted during operations. Buildings represent one of the most eftective levers for decarbonization. The development and widespread dissemination of innovative building technologies in both countries can significantly mitigate energy use and GHG emissions.
Enhanced ties between U.S. and India building energy researchers and industry, with a public-private collaboration to identify deployment pathways;
Outcome-based R&D to drive the development of cost-effective technologies and their implementation;
Improved capabilities for both nations to leapfrog development of building technologies and markets.
